Dr. Bruce Chertow is is Chief of the Section of Endocrinology and Director of the Diabetes Center at Marshall Unversity School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. He was one of the first faculty members at this new medical school, developing the Endocrinology Division and also serving as Pofessor of Anatomy. . He has written extensively, with over 100 major publications, many dealing with the role of vitamin A in in insulin and glucagon secretion. He is an expert in the role of antioxidants in normal physiology and in disease states. He has received numerous Veterans Administration and NIH grants to carry on his basic research. He has carried out major trials on insulin, sulfonylureas, IGF-1, and angiotensin receptor blockers. He has the unique distinction of having participated in the last year of the original UGDP Study. He has a significant interest in the medical decision making process and has authored and edited several books in this area.
His clinic has a high representation of an important and understudied diabetic population, that of the Appalachian poor West Virginaia is one of a group of states with the highest incidence of diabetes and obesity. Dr. Chertow founded the West Virginia State Diabetes Program
